Women in detention are not safe in Mayanmar
In Myanmar, women in detention are subjected to torture, sexual harassment and threats of rape.
Earlier this year, five women detained for protesting against a military coup in the country claimed that they had been tortured and harassed since their arrest. In this article, their names have been changed for security reasons.
Warning: This article contains disturbing details of violence and sexual harassment.
Protests have been going on across the country since
the military came to power in Myanmar in February, and women have played a key
role in the resistance movement.
Human rights groups say that although the military has
used kidnappings and violence in Myanmar in the past, it has escalated since
the military coup.
As of December 8, total 1,318 civilians had been
killed in military operations against the pro-democracy movement in the
country, including 93 women, according to the human rights organization
Assistance Association for Political Prisoners.
At least eight of the women were killed in custody,
and four of them were beaten to death at an interrogation center.
A total of 10,200 people were detained, including
2,000 women.
Democrat activist “N Soo May” was detained for about
six months, during which she spent the first ten days in Myanmar's notorious
interrogation center, where she claims to have been sexually assaulted.
She told the BBC she was making placards one day when
she was arrested and forcibly pushed into a van.
"It was nocturnal when I arrived at an unidentified
site and I was blindfolded. They were driving me away from imaginary obstacles
as if they were making fun of me."
She declared that her admission had been gotten
through torment and that her admission had been acquired through torment. We
assault and kill them.
She says that she was sexually assaulted while
blindfolded. According to “N Soo May”, soldiers removed her clothes and touched
her bared body badly.
